2ND Elgon Half Marathon Launched for Protecting Forests and Biodiversity

As NFA we are proud to partner in this year’s edition of the Joshua Cheptegei Half Marathon

The thoughts of forest conservation and tree planting were at the forefront as the 2nd Edition of the Elgon Half Marathon, hosted by United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and world champion Joshua Cheptegei, was launched in Uganda.

The event gathered runners, partners, media and conservationists to advocate for climate action, inclusion, and tourism. Completing participants will receive medals, water bottles, and running kits, symbolizing their commitment to these vital causes.

Douglas Lukwago, NFA’s Business Development Manager, reiterated NFA’s dedication to forest conservation and support towards the Elgon Half Marathon: “We are proud to partner in this year’s edition of the Joshua Cheptegei Half Marathon to distribute seedlings and offer expertise in forestry to conserve Uganda’s biodiversity.”

AMREF’s Patrick Kagurusi announced a partnership with NFA to plant 300,000 trees in Mbale and other regions. Joshua Cheptegei emphasized, “This marathon is a call to action to protect our environment. We are promoting inclusivity and empowerment of women.”

UNDP Resident Representative Mwanne Vwede Ibahor acknowledged the event’s broader impact: “This is not just a run. Communities around Mt. Elgon face climate challenges and need support. Joshua has used his talent for his community.”

FAO Country Representative Querido Antonio Luis Ferreira highlighted the interconnection between food security and conservation: “Food is important, and for one to run, there has to be food in place grown in a conducive environment with trees and other bio – diversity.”

The event underscored the need for forest protection, climate action, and gender equality, promoting a healthier future for Uganda.
