AMURU-UGANDA. Police in Gulu District are holding five suspects over illegal possession of wildlife product
The suspects were apprehended from Amuru District on Friday 5th October 2019 and were brought to Gulu Central Police Station where they held in custody.
They include Ajuman Nacuru, Afuke Cosmus, Ekanya Vincent, Kakama Moses and Wamani Christopher all were to make statements and their particulars were not yet established.
Jimmy Patrick Okema, the Police Public Relations Officer for Aswa Region told Media in Gulu at Northern Uganda Media Club on Monday.
Okema revealed that the five were netted out on an intelligence report and where found in possession of 400 kilograms of wildlife product.
Police have however preferred charges of unlawful possession of wildlife product against the suspects and their files were yet to be taken to Directorate of Public Prosecution for sanctioning, police says.
However, wildlife is the Uganda major tourist potential to drive the country towards the local economic development of 2030 vision yet poaching is identified as one of the major setbacks to the industry.
According to Professor Iphariam Kamuntu, the Ugandan Minister for Tourism, Wildlife and Antiquities, tourism accounts for 7.7& of Uganda Gross Domestic Product.
The sector has earned Uganda 1.6 US Billion Dollars equivalent to UGX 8.36 Trillion in 2017/ 2018 financial year creating over 6000 jobs to Ugandans.
